Knowing about children and their development underpins a lot of the work done in the early years. This course will help teacher candidates better understand both the developmental patterns and sequences in young children's development and how the context of this learning impacts on children's progress. This course supports trainees to:

'Childhood Development for Primary Teachers' is a fascinating course of study of children between the ages 6-12 years. It entails the study of the holistic development of the child. Their physical, cognitive, social/emotional and language development. Physical development is muscle and motor development;  an ability to run, jump, climb, or hold a pencil properly etc. Cognitive development is an ability to perceive, think, and gain undertsanding of the world around them. Social/Emotional development is in part the ability to understand who they are, and how to interact with others. As part of Language development, children learn how to emphasize or stress certain syllables so as to alter the meaning of words and sentences. This skill enables them to communicate distinctly different messages using the same words. 

This course is designed to help you understand how and why children do and say the things they do.
