SEC139 Applied Science(Sport and Exercise Nutrition)
The Sports and exercise Nutrition Course is designed to provide participants with information needed to develop an understanding of the importance of nutrition for sports and exercise. Made up of ten units, which will be covered over a ten week period, this course will provide complete evidence-based insight into the key nutritional concepts and help students to develop an understanding of the relationship between nutrition and sports training.
PPE232 Sport Project
Hello Teacher Candidates!
Welcome to the course Sport Project (PPE 232)This course is designed for all YEAR TWO (2) SEMESTER SIX (6) teacher candidates.
This course comprises six (6) units and all will for twelve (12) weeks of instruction using the face-to-face and online mode of delivery from January 29th – April 26th 2024, for this semester Two, (1) week for semester break one (1) week for mid semester quiz and one (1) week for examinations. This course is examinable thus, you are required to complete your examination in the week of April 29th, 2024.
NOTE: you are required to attend all sessions at your respective centers with the appointed tutor.
The course and the material are organized per Unit. Each unit’s section includes a document to read with the task for that week, additional readings required, and materials are on the platform under heading course information. It is most important to participate in class discussions, and all practical sessions, exchange ideas, and ask questions within the weekly class meetings.
Important Note: you are required to attend all Face-to-Face sessions. These sessions will be conducted by the lecturer from the respective Centre.
PPE231 Adaptive Physical Education
Adapted physical education is physical education that has been modified so it is appropriate for students with disabilities. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA, 2004), all students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) should receive effective physical education services. Adapted PE classes are comprised of students placed due to need and adapted peers selected to assist in the facilitation of a safe, collaborative and active environment.
This course is concerned with the role of physical education in providing services to students with disabilities. Particular areas of knowledge will focus upon growth and development, motor learning and the psycho-social factors affecting students with disabilities. In addition, this course will deal with planning, operating, teaching and evaluation of students with disabilities as well as focus on the various disorders, as they relate to the kinds of intervention strategies that may be provided.
Objectives:
At the end of this course, participants should:
- Demonstrate the ability to screen and assess physical education skills of individuals exhibiting various disability conditions.
- Demonstrate the ability to write in behavioral terms and assess instructional objectives for adapted physical education.
- Demonstrate the ability to reassess and revise the student’s program as necessary.
- Demonstrate the ability analyze, adapt, and implement physical education curriculum in providing programs for a variety of disability conditions.
- Demonstrate the ability to adapt teaching methods, materials, and techniques for physical and motor fitness to the needs of students with disabilities.
- Demonstrate the ability to use community and staff resources within the special education environment.
PPE111 History & Growth of Physical Education & Sport
Sports are timeless activities that humans have enjoyed since at ancient times, as exemplified by the Greek Olympic Games. Sporting events and changes are influenced by the economic, social and political situations. Each of these has impacted on the place of sport in society and the changes in sport over time. The course History and Development of Physical Education and Sport will allow learners to do research into the genesis and evolution of the different sports; make the learner more appreciative of where we are now in terms of the development of sports and devise effective strategies that may be utilized in ensuring that sports continue to have the impact it presently has on the society.
OBJECTIVES
This course will develop student teachers’ understanding of:
1. The importance of the inclusion of physical education in school curriculum.
2. The basic philosophies that have influenced physical education programmes.
3. The issues and challenges affecting physical education and sport today.
4. The sociological effects of physical education.
5. The significance of movement in physical education.
PPE 112 Anatomy & Physiology
In order to train individuals for success in Physical Education and Sport, it is paramount to have in-depth knowledge of the form and functions of the human body. Hence, the exposure of our teacher candidates to this field of study is a necessity to the continued development of top-quality physical education teachers. In addition, this knowledge is valuable to national development with regards to improved health and wellbeing.
GENERAL LEARNING OUTCOMES
This course will enable students to develop:
1. The awareness of the structure and function of the human body.
2. An appreciation of the interrelationships between the various systems of the human body.
3. An awareness of interrelationship between the structure and function of the human body.
4. The ability to carry out simple/basic physical examination of Gross superficial Anatomical features of the human body.
5. The effective use of the terminologies associated with the discipline.
6. An understanding of the level of organization of the human body.
PPE 113 Football Level One
The sport of football is very popular worldwide, in the Caribbean and is reputed to be a dominant sport in Guyana, from the prep school to primary through tertiary and in the wider communities This course seeks to expose student-teachers to a wide repertoire of knowledge of the basic skills of football, the basic rules that govern the game and to enhance their ability to apply these skill and law in game situations.
GENERAL LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of the course students should be able:
1. Teaching the basic skill in the game of football
2. Know the methodology in teaching the basic skill to beginners.
3. Plan lesson in a logical sequential method.
4. Identify, common faults and to make necessary corrections to basic skills.
5. Develop an appreciation of the evolution and dynamic transformation of the modern game both internationally and locally.
6. The basic rules and their applications in game situations.
PPE 222 Sport Management
This course seeks to equip student teachers with the necessary tools to expose their students to the business and management functions related to the sporting, recreation, and sport for all industry. It will essentially broaden the scope and opportunities of students who wish to branch out into specialized areas of sports. The course covers a range of management disciplines inclusive of governance procedures, strategic planning, event coordination, sports facility management and the marketing of sports. The teaching approach will include theoretical delivery, student research, field trips and presentations by students or experts in the industry.

Welcome to the course Volleyball (PPE 122) and has been designed for all YEAR ONE (1) SEMESTER TWO (2) teacher candidates.
This course comprises four (4) units and all will for twelve (12) weeks of instruction using the face-to-face mode of delivery from January 06 – March 28, 2025, for this semester Two, (1) week for semester break one (1) week for mid semester quiz and one (1) week for examinations. This course is non examinable however, you are required to complete your final practical assessment in or before the week of March 28, 2025.
NOTE: you are required to attend all sessions at your respective centers with the appointed tutor.
The course and the material are organized per Unit. Each unit’s section includes a document to read with the task for that week, additional readings required, and materials are on the platform under heading course information. It is most important to participate in class discussions, and all practical sessions, exchange ideas, and ask questions within the weekly class meetings.

This course is designed to increase trainee teacher’s knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of the game. It also aims to expose students to the practical and theoretical components of the game. Trainee teachers will have the opportunity to apply the skills and rules learnt in game situations.

- Discuss the history of volleyball.
- Demonstrate basic techniques in executing the fundamental skills of the game.
- Apply skills appropriately in game situations.
- Apply the basic rules of the game.
- State basic roles and functions of game officials.

This course is intended to expose participants to the various methods needed to develop fitness in athletes and recreationists at all levels. It also opens the door to effective wellness management. Finally, the course seeks to develop the skills needed by teachers to educate the wider public about the importance of, and how to develop healthy lifestyles.

1. Define Physical Fitness and identify hypokinetic diseases.
2. Explain the importance of the Warm-up and cool down in relation to physical activities.
3. Identify and explain the components of fitness and skill related fitness.
4. Outline the purpose for testing and execute anthropometric testing.
5. Explain and apply the principles of an exercise programme design.
6. Apply the basic elements of exercise prescriptions.
7. Identify the different stages of progression and when to apply them.
8. Explain aging in relation to physical fitness activities.
9. Prescribe activities for the different groups.
PPE 134 Pedagogy for Secondary Teachers I Physical Education Major
Welcome to Pedagogy One.
This course seeks to expose student teachers to current methodologies of teaching Physical Education. It will also introduce student teachers to the skill learning processes and provide them with the opportunity to learn proper lesson planning techniques. It will further serve to expose them to the many benefits of Physical Education and contemporary methods of assessing Physical Education.
The fundamental purpose of Physical Education is to promote optimal growth and development not only physically but socially, emotionally, and intellectually. Hence, this subject is designed to equip student teachers with the necessary competencies to plan, teach and evaluate physical activities at all levels.
