LIT 133 Literacy Instruction for Second Language Learners
This course, Literacy Instruction for Second Language Learners, has been adapted for online delivery by the Cyril Potter College of Education with your needs in mind. It was developed in response to the growing demand for continuous teacher training in the 21st century.
The course site is accessible anytime, anywhere (24/7) as long as you have an internet connection.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Literacy Instruction for Second Language Learners is a comprehensive course specifically designed to provide teacher candidates with an understanding of how to offer literacy instruction to second language learners/ English language learners. Second Language Learners can have a wide variety of needs in their reading and writing instruction. Some learners may read and write fluently in their first/native language while others may enter the classroom with little or no prior literacy instruction. This course covers many topics, including grade-level strategies and ideas for teaching more advanced reading and writing skills such as those required by the Literacy Standards/ Scope and Sequence. With the right support and opportunities for engagement, SLLs/ ELLs can become successful, life-long readers and writers.
GENERAL OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course, teacher candidates will possess the ability to:
skillfully plan and execute lessons to SLLs, with a special focus on lesson objectives, strategies, differentiated instruction and tools.
understand and analyze the role of background knowledge when catering to specific learner needs.
understand and apply a variety of teaching methods (peer learning, telling inspirational stories of success, project base-based learning, strength-based instruction, partnering with learners and families and continuous informal assessments) for SLLs achievement.

We’ll also examine the cultural, social, and psychological factors that influence these stories and how they resonate with adolescents from diverse backgrounds.
